BiodivERsA Newsletter – March 2018

EDITO – AN ENLARGED NETWORK WITH A REINFORCED INTERNATIONAL AND TRANS-SECTORAL DIMENSION

Year after year, BiodivERsA is increasing its coverage to better tackle the challenges linked to the build-up of the European Research Area for biodiversity, ecosystem services and Nature-based solutions. Noticeably, in late 2017, three new members have joined the network: the Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS from Wallonia-Belgium<http://www.biodiversa.org/1315>, allowing us to better support the whole Belgium research community ; the Environmental Protection Agency<http://www.biodiversa.org/1319> from Ireland, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection<http://www.biodiversa.org/1317> of Israel, corresponding to two countries joining the BiodivERsA partnership. Through this enlargement, BiodivERsA improves its thematical and geographical coverage, which will offer new opportunities of research collaboration.

Further, since 2016, BiodivERsA has initiated a strong collaboration with the Belmont Forum through the BiodivScen Action and the launch of a joint call on ’Scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services<http://www.biodiversa.org/1224>’. Following the enlargement of BiodivERsA to ORs and OCTs in 2015, this collaboration will contribute to reinforce the international dimension of the BiodivERsA network and its activities. Thanks to the BiodivScen Action, BiodivERsA is indeed collaborating with funding agencies located worldwide (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ivory Coast, USA). Also supported by the European Commission, the joint BiodivERsA-Belmont Forum call is announced to be a great success with more than 130 pre-proposals submitted and over 25 Mio Euro reserved to fund research projects. BiodivERsA might consider reiterating such collaboration with international partners for its future calls when relevant.

At the European level, BiodivERsA is pursuing its collaboration with other initiatives, and notably with the WATER-JPI <http://www.waterjpi.eu/> and FACCE-JPI<https://www.faccejpi.com/> , for working at the crossroads of biodiversity and other related issues, such as agriculture, climate change and water management. Hopefully these collaborations will lead to the implementation of joint actions, including calls, and contribute to better tackle trans-sectoral issues.

In this newsletter, you will learn more about the BiodivScen Action and joint call. You will also find information on the three latest BiodivERsA policy briefs. As regards the impacts of BiodivERsA-funded projects, you will discover the societal outputs of the SalmoInvade project, funded through the 2012-2013 BiodivERsA call and scientific outputs of the REGARDS project, funded through the 2011-2012 BiodivERsA call. Finally, this newsletter highlights the profile of two BiodivERsA partners who recently joined the network, i.e. F.R.S.-FNRS<http://www.biodiversa.org/1315> (Wallonia, Belgium) and the Irish Environmental Protection Agency<http://www.biodiversa.org/1319> (Ireland).
