Dear Colleagues,

Thank you very much for how you have received this initiative; we couldn’t have had a better start. So far I have receive "expressions of interest" from:
Countries:
Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Spain

Organizations/projects/initiatives:
Bioversity, CETAF, Index Fungorum, PESI, Species 2000

So what will be next:

1. I will create a Google group and include all of you interested.

2. Along with your interest you sent some initial ideas; those are an excellent base. I am going to make a first approach at integrating your input (all collected in this other doc<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eXhory4RMlneyruslwlk3ky4U2zmBrNINcIzKC1KfsA/edit?usp=sharing>) and either tomorrow of on Wednesday present you with a (hopefully) more organized view of what we want an can do.

Best wishes,

Paco

Subject: Remider: An invitation to participate in a COST Action involving European GBIF Nodes

Dear Colleagues,

This is a friendly reminder of the invitation I sent earlier this week. The idea is to have a core partnership to prepare the proposal by COB tomorrow. So far I have collected positive answers from Poland, Ireland, France, Portugal, Norway and Belgium (and PESI), so we are seven countries already involved; COST actions require a minimum of 5 so that is a go, but COST actions are intended to be very inclusive (=extensive), there is room for everyone.

Questions, suggestions, and specially “expressions of interest”, still welcome; at this stage, until COB tomorrow. Nevertheless, COST actions include a mechanism to accept additional members after they have started.

With all best wishes,

Paco

Dear Colleagues,

Recently a Call for COST Actions was issued:
http://www.cost.eu/participate/open_call

Having gone through the documentation and contacting colleagues and COST Helpdesk. I believe we have an opportunity here to carry out many of the things we talk every time we get together but then struggle do due to time and resource constrains.

I have also gone through the ongoing COST Actions (c.30 around “biodiversity”) and identified a niche for us that fits the “COST spirit” and I believe is understandable: “Integrating the integrations for biodiversity information”.

As usual with EC calls, documentation is not scanty, but as a start, the documents to focus upon are the following:

http://www.cost.eu/download/SESA_Guidelines
http://www.cost.eu/download/Technical_Annex

The call’s relevant parameters are:
                Going for large networks,
Annual budget c. 100,000 €, for 4 years,
15 page max. application doc. (the technical annex)
                First collecting date 24 march
I have created a google doc to prepare the technical annex, and populated with my initial concept and some ideas for tasks/working groups:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MVPGxJMjcDizcgx790eLbODp4YQHB7YwiGrGulDdgno/edit?usp=sharing

Before jumping to the documents and add text, please let me know if you are willing to be part of this application, your ideas for the general concept/challenge and if you think you could lead a particular set of activities /working group.

With your input I will create a Google group to handle communications regarding the preparation of this COST action. We will see by Friday COB if we have critical mass to go ahead.

It is not a lot of time, but application is short and we are a pretty consolidated community.

With all best wishes,

Paco
