Dear all,

The Convention of Biological Diversity has declared "Invasive Alien Species" as theme for the 2009 International Day for Biological Diversity, which will be celebrated on May 22nd. Since the 2006 "SOS Invasions" Conference, significant progress has been achieved and the Belgian Biodiversity Platform has therefore decided to organize a second one-day conference on the theme.

The present meeting, entitled "Science Facing Aliens", will be organised in Brussels on May 11th 2009. It is intended to take stock of the progress achieved through basic and applied research being conducted in Belgium and offers an opportunity to showcase this research on the topic to colleagues, and to persons involved in science and environmental policy. The meeting will cover a broad range of topics related to invasive alien species: (i) mechanisms and evolution of species invasiveness, (ii) the impacts of invasions on biodiversity, health and economy and (iii) detection, risk assessment and management.

You are warmly invited to register to this conference before March 31st and to present either a talk or a poster on your ias-related research projects. Registration for the meeting can be done on the conference web site (http://ias.biodiversity.be/conference_2009).

I hope to see you at the conference. Very best regards,

Etienne Branquart
