meeting of the assessment on values) Call for nominations of experts Call
for expressions of interest in providing technical support units*
EM/2018/06/Rev.1 Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested
stakeholders,

We would like to thank you again for the great outcome of IPBES-6 in
Medellin, Colombia. Following that success, we are now contacting you
regarding the three assessments which the Plenary decided to initiate in
2018 and 2019.

The Plenary in decision IPBES-6/1 approved:

   - the undertaking of a *methodological assessment regarding the diverse
   conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its benefits*,
   hereafter referred to as “the assessment on values”, *following IPBES-6*,
   for consideration by the Plenary at IPBES-9 (section VI, para 3), based on
   a scoping document

   out in annex VI to decision IPBES-4/1*;*
   - the undertaking of a *thematic assessment of the sustainable use of
   wild species* *following IPBES-6*, for consideration by the Plenary by
   no later than IPBES-10 (section V, para 2), based on a scoping document

   set out in annex IV to decision IPBES-5/1*;* and
   - the undertaking of a *thematic assessment of invasive alien
species*, *following
   IPBES-7*, for consideration by the Plenary at IPBES-10 (section V, para
   3). Note that there will be a separate call for nominations of experts for
   the assessment of invasive alien species, later this year.

In line with the agreed procedures for the preparation of the Platform’s
deliverables, the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel would like to formally
invite governments and other relevant stakeholders:

   1. *to nominate experts *for:
      1. the assessment on values; and
      2. the assessment of the sustainable use of wild species; and
   2. *to make offers for hosting a technical support unit (TSU) *for:
      1. the assessment on values;
      2. the assessment of the sustainable use of wild species; and


*1. Nomination of experts*
All governments and relevant organizations or institutions are encouraged
to submit nominations. Nominating organizations or institutions are not
required to have been admitted to the Plenary of IPBES as an observer.
Please help us to disseminate this call for nominations of experts widely
to relevant institutions and organizations.

Expertise of candidates should match the needs of one of the two
assessments, and be in line with the themes and skills required in the
chapters of their respective scoping documents.

Nominated experts should have expertise in one or more disciplines of
natural science, social science or the humanities, be indigenous and local
knowledge experts or have expertise in indigenous and local knowledge
systems, or be policy experts and practitioners. All nominees should have
experience in working within interdisciplinary, international and/or global
contexts.

We are particularly looking for experts with a scientific and/or practical
background in: ecological and environmental economics, environmental and
sustainability sciences, environmental ethics and philosophy, environmental
sociology and anthropology, environmental psychology and behavioral
science, environmental history, science and technology studies, political
ecology, human geography, human ecology, cultural ecology, environmental
policy and law, political sciences and trade, and from other fields related
to integrative approaches to human-nature relations and linking knowledge
to policy and practice.

Governments and organizations are invited to nominate women as well as men
with a diversity of disciplinary backgrounds in order to ensure a balanced
team of experts.
Please follow this procedure to nominate experts:

   1. Nominees are invited to fill out the application form and attach
   their curriculum vitae through the dedicated web portal

   login credentials or Nominees not yet registered on the IPBES web site will

   2. The nominating government or organization (Nominator) indicated by
   the Nominee will receive an email with a link to the nomination form and
   will be invited to approve and submit the nominations in the web portal.
   3. Nominators and Nominees will receive a confirmation via email once
   the nomination has been duly submitted.

Interested experts (Nominees) are encouraged to contact their IPBES
National Focal Point (https://www.ipbes.net/national-focal-points
<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&id=8660e7766d&e=fe2a129752>)
regarding any country-specific processes or deadlines and are requested to
fill out their application form by no later than *1 June 2018*. Nominators
(governments or organizations) should approve the applications and submit
their nominations by *11 June 2018*. Early nominations ahead of the
deadline are encouraged. Experts will be selected according to the IPBES
rules of procedure during the eleventh meeting of the Multidisciplinary
Expert Panel and the Bureau, taking place 25-29 June 2018 in Bonn, Germany.
Experts will be informed of their selection in July 2018.
All nominated experts need to be available to attend their respective
assessment’s first author meeting, which are scheduled as follows (venues
for these meetings will be communicated in due course):

   - Assessment on values: 03-07 September 2018;
   - Assessment of sustainable use of wild species: 24-28 September 2018.

*2. Offers to host technical support units*
Following decision IPBES-6/1 (section IX), the secretariat is herewith
issuing an open call for expressions of interest to provide technical
support units (TSUs) for:

   1. the methodological assessment on values;
   2. the thematic assessment of the sustainable use of wild species; or
   3. the thematic assessment of invasive alien species.

Governments or organizations interested in providing one of these technical
support units are invited to send their offer, using the template provided
here

to the Secretariat at secretariat at ipbes.net *by 16 May 2018*.
The offer should include specific information on:

   - the assessment for which the offer is being made;
   - background and relevance of the hosting institution to the assessment;
   - the administration and staffing of the technical support unit;
   - funding arrangements, including a budget detailing how the IPBES
   dedicated funds and the matching in-kind contribution from the host
   institution will be used.

The technical support units will also be selected during the week of 25-29
June 2018.
