From Biodiversa at fondationbiodiversite.fr Mon May 4 19:22:03 2020 From: Biodiversa at fondationbiodiversite.fr (Biodiversa) Date: Mon, 4 May 2020 17:22:03 +0000 Subject: [Biodiversa] =?utf-8?q?Invitation_to_contribute_to_Sutherland?= =?utf-8?q?=E2=80=99s_2021_Horizon_Scan_for_Global_conservation_and_biolog?= =?utf-8?q?ical_diversity?= Message-ID: <55D2120D-3B3D-4C87-83F2-69D967B78462@fondationbiodiversite.fr> Dear Sir, Dear Madam, BiodivERsA has been invited to participate in a horizon scan exercise driven by William J. Sutherland to identify emerging issues for Global conservation and biological diversity. BiodivERsA was already invited the past two years to participate in this exercise. This resulted in having four of the topics suggested through the BiodivERsA channel selected among the final list of the 15 most important emerging issues (one in the 2018 Horizon Scan topics selected among 117 initially proposed - including 5 channelled through BiodivERsA; two in the 2019 Horizon Scan selected among 91 topics - including 5 channelled through BiodivERsA; and two in the 2020 Horizon Scan selected among 89 topics - including 5 channelled through BiodivERsA). The objective of this exercise (which exists since 2008) is to identify emerging topics that are not yet widely known or understood in the conservation community but that could have substantial effects on biological diversity at a large scale in the medium to long term. The aim of identifying such emerging topics is to focus attention and stimulate debate about these subjects, potentially leading to new research foci, policy developments, or business innovations. * see attachment #1: outputs of the 2020 horizon scan * see attachment #2: list of topics selected since 2008 For the 2021 horizon scan exercise BiodivERsA will collect, select and present a few emerging topics, and we invite you to propose one or several possible topics (keeping your ownership on the topic proposed of course). Please submit topics that you find particularly relevant for this exercise, together with a short rationale for each (200-250 words max.) explaining (i) the novelty of the issue; (ii) why this topic is important at a global scale, and (iii) to what extent it represents an opportunity or a risk. Please provide key references ?peer-reviewed scientific papers, grey literature, websites?- in support of the rationales (see application form). Please note that issues must be novel, and the implications for the environment must be clear. It is important that issues are not well known, and have not been submitted before, unless there has since been a significant advance in the area. We are looking for issues that most of people have not heard of. As an example, you will find attached (attachment #3) the template to suggest topics filled in with an already submitted topic that was selected in the 2020 Horizon Scan. This will give you a better idea of what is expected. If the topic you suggest is selected among the final list of top emerging issues, you will be acknowledged as the source of this topic. If you want to participate to this exercise, please provide us no later than 2 June 2020 17:00 CEST (local time in Paris) with a topic title and rationale through the following form: https://forms.gle/pRLfDGj2yWkWL6WV9. Please do not hesitate to contact Xavier Le Roux (xavierleroux at hotmail.fr) and Claire Blery (claire.blery at fondationbiodiversite.fr) would you have any question. The webinar will be held on 19 May 2020 from 1.30 to 4.45 p.m. CEST (local time in Brussels / Paris). You will find attached the agenda of the webinar. Participating in this webinar will be a great opportunity to learn more about the current framing proposed for the Partnership ?Rescuing Biodiversity to Safeguard Life on Earth?, its objectives, activities, anticipated governance and budget. Please note that this webinar will also mark the start of an open consultation that we will launch, to collect feedbacks from a broad range of actors on the current version of the proposal for the Partnership on biodiversity. The outputs of the consultation will contribute to develop an updated version of the Partnership proposal. > REGISTER TO THE WEBINAR HERE < Once registered you will receive all the information to join our webinar on the 19th of May. BiodivERsA is pleased to announce the publication of the brochure presenting the outputs of the BiodivERsA 2018-2019 Call on ?Biodiversity and its influence on animal, human and plant health?. 15 funding organisations from 11 countries participated in this call, and 10 projects demonstrating both scientific excellence and societal / policy relevance were selected for a total amount of funding of over 11.8 million euro. This call appeared to be very timely in the context of the Covid-19 pandemics, as the selected projects will deepen our understanding of the relationships that exist between biodiversity and health, including the factors that drive pathogen emergence. This will help us to move health strategies from reaction to more anticipation! > Read the brochure HERE < *** * New animated movie on the invasive potential of the African clawed frog The INVAXEN project - funded under the BiodivERsA 2012-13 joint call for research proposals on invasive species and biological invasions ? won the BiodivERsA Prize for Excellence and Impact and was thus awarded the opportunity to present its work in an animated video. This prize acknowledges the excellent, pioneering research performed in INVAXEN. The INVAXEN project investigated the biology and invasion patterns of the invasive African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) and worked closely with local stakeholders to improve conservation actions on the field. The Belgian Biodiversity Platform & BiodivERsA led the production of this video, along with the INVAXEN project researchers and the video production company, Squarefish. > Watch the video HERE < *** * CORDIS Research*eu?s special edition dedicated on Biodiversity! Contribution by BiodivERsA CORDIS Research*eu, the official European Commission magazine specialised in communicating results from EU-funded research projects, is published in six languages (EN, DE, ES, FR, IT, PL) and reaches thousands of subscribers. In its latest issue, published in May, it focusses on the theme Biodiversity: a New Deal for Nature. Xavier Le Roux, the BiodivERsA Chair & Coordinator, was interviewed by the magazine. The article titled Pushing the boundaries of transnational biodiversity research summarizes the activities and achievements of the BiodivERsA network over the 2015-2020 period. > Read BiodivERsA?s contribution to the magazine HERE < > Access to the whole magazine HERE < Do not hesitate to share these new resources in your networks.
