Dear Colleagues from the European GBIF nodes

Some of you are also on the mailing list of the CETAF and recommended that
we share the underlying mail with you. This long term initiative is also
particularly interesting for GBIF and its secretariat. It was identified
that you could surely assist in providing estimations of needs, figures in
the Natural history domain.

Do not hesitate to contact the Cetaf Secretariat and/or me if you have
further questions or to provide figures.

All the best

Pat

Subject: [Cetaf] REQUEST FOR DATA ON DIGITISATION

Dear All,

A member of the EU commission is exploring the possibility of setting up a
European level massive digitising effort and on preparing a call for tender
for EU infrastructures for digitising, with the possibility of eventually
setting up a co-funding initiative with European governments.

CETAF has been approached to provide baseline information on the costs of
digitising within the domain of Natural History Collections (museum and
herbarium collections, natural history related books, archives etc.). The
commissioner would like preliminary information on the costs of digitisation
across Europe in three weeks (2 May). The process is in the beginning,
exploratory stages but this contact gives us a chance to influence an
initiative that, if successful, may be of great benefit to ourselves and our
community.

A non-exhaustive set of examples was sent to us (see below) that can be
filled in on an institution by institution basis.

Please complete as much information as you can for your institution and send
your responses to Ana Casino (ana.casino at cetaf.org) who will coordinate the
information that will be communicated to the EU commission as well as shared
with the CETAF digitisation group.

The costs of digitization of natural history collections
Needed: low and high estimations on the global costs of digitalization
actions.

- Costs of the digitization of a collection of 100,000 books (after 1900)
- Costs of the digitization of a library of ancient books (10,000 items)
- Costs of the digitization of photographs (2 million photos of diverse
types)
- Costs of the digitization of photographic slide collections (ca. 20,000
slides)
- Costs of the digitization 3D of museum pieces (ca. 10,000 items)
- Costs of the digitization of herbarium specimens (1 million items)

Cordially,
Ana Casino, Michelle Price, Patricia Mergen
