The Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Services (IPBES), has been established to strengthen the science-policy
interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services. The Platform's 124
member states are committed to building IPBES as the leading
intergovernmental body for assessing the planet's biodiversity, its
essential ecosystem services, and options to improve the conservation and
sustainable use of biodiversity. IPBES provides policy-relevant but not
policy-prescriptive information.

IPBES e-news provides information to all interested stakeholders on
progress in the implementation of the first IPBES work programme.

The fourth session of the Plenary of IPBES

was hosted by the Government of Malaysia, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention
Centre, from 22 to 28 February 2016. It was preceded by a meeting of all
stakeholders interested in IPBES

and by regional consultations in the five UN regions. It was attended by
representatives of 97 countries and 59 observers. Please see daily coverage

Main outcomes include:

   - Approval of the summary for policy makers of the assessments on
pollination,
   pollinators and food production

   and on scenarios and models of biodiversity and ecosystem services

   - Approval of the undertaking of a global assessment of biodiversity and

   alien species and their control

   (annex III to decision IPBES-4/1). The 5th Plenary of IPBES (2017) will
   consider its undertaking;
   - Decision to further scope the assessment on the sustainable use and
   conservation of biodiversity. A call for experts is open until 5 May;
   - Approval of the scoping report for a methodological assessment of
   diverse conceptualizations of values and nature’s benefits, including
   ecosystem services (annex IV to decision IPBES-4/1). The 5th Plenary of
   IPBES (2017) will consider its undertaking;
   - Request to continue piloting methods to include indigenous and local
   knowledge in on-going assessments;
   - Request to continue the development of the matchmaking facility, and
   to hold a second capacity-building forum.

A media round table involving the co-chairs of the pollination assessment,

*Next steps*

*The global assessment and the Fifth Edition of the Global Biodiversity
Outlook of CBD*
The IPBES global assessment will form a major contribution to the Global
Biodiversity Outlook 5 of CBD. A side event

presenting the scope of this assessment, co-organized by IPBES and the CBD
secretariat took place on 27 April at CBD SBSTTA 20. Already at its

SBSTTA had recommended to COP a draft decision which foresees that the 5th

its twentieth meeting, SBSTTA complemented its guidance on this matter with
further recommendations (to be posted here).

The external First Order Draft review by experts of the IPBES thematic
assessment on land degradation and restoration and of the four regional
assessments (Africa, AsiaPacific, Americas, Europe and Central Asia) on
biodiversity and ecosystem services will run for 6 weeks (30 May-11 July
2016). This external peer review process represents an important step for
the quality and relevance of the work of IPBES. IPBES is calling for
experts to provide on-line review of one or several chapters of these

and plays the role of fund management officer for IPBES.

and local knowledge, as well as knowledge, information and data.
