Please see the below invitation of the IPBES Secretariat to respond to the
online questionnaire for the internal IPBES review (by 7 August). The
questionnaire specifically targets IPBES National Focal Points, former &
current members of the MEP and Bureau, the Secretariat including the
technical support units, *members of the IPBES task forces*, and *co-chairs
and coordinating lead authors of completed and ongoing assessments*.

Dear IPBES National focal points

I would like to invite you to respond to the on-line questionnaire to
contribute to the internal element of the review of IPBES, by *7 August
2017*.



The IPBES Plenary, at its fifth session, approved the terms of reference
for the review of IPBES which includes an internal element to be performed
by the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel and the Bureau (see decision
IPBES-5/2, annex, contained in document IPBES/5/15).



*The overall purpose of this review is to reflect on what we have learnt
over the first years of our young organisation, to make it better and,
ultimately, increase the use of science as a basis for policymaking. *



According to the terms of reference, a questionnaire will be used for both
the internal and external parts of the review process. A draft of this
questionnaire was presented to the Plenary at its fifth session. In line
with decision IPBES-5/2, the draft questionnaire was revised by the Bureau,
in consultation with the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, taking into
account comments received at the fifth session of the Plenary, sent to
IPBES Members and observers for further comments between 26 April and 10
May 2017, and finalised, based on comments received.



The internal review committee, comprised of the IPBES Chair, a member of
the Bureau, a co-chair and two members of the MEP and the Executive
Secretary, will analyse responses to this questionnaire and prepare a draft
internal review report for discussion and approval by the MEP and the
Bureau at their 10th meetings (October 2017). The internal review report
will be presented to the Plenary  at its sixth session, for information
(March 2018), and its conclusions transmitted to the external reviewers.



This questionnaire is being sent, according to the terms of reference, to IPBES
National focal points; former and current members of the MEP and the
Bureau; the secretariat, including the technical support units; members of
IPBES task forces; and co-chairs and coordinating lead authors of completed
and ongoing IPBES assessments.
