Dear IPBES members, observers and stakeholders,

The Plenary, at its sixth session held from 18 to 24 March 2018 in
Medellin, Colombia, approved in decision IPBES-6/1 the undertaking of a
thematic assessment of invasive alien species. The assessment will commence
following IPBES 7 and will be considered by the Plenary at IPBES 10.

In line with the agreed procedures for the preparation of IPBES
deliverables, the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel would like to formally
invite Governments and stakeholders to nominate experts for the assessment
of invasive alien species.

All Governments and relevant organizations or institutions are encouraged
to submit nominations. Nominations may also be submitted by organizations
or institutions, regardless of whether they are admitted to the Plenary of
IPBES as an observer. *Please help us to disseminate this call for
nominations of experts widely to relevant institutions and organizations,
such as universities or research institutions*.

Nominees should have expertise related to the themes and skills required
for the chapters of the assessment as set out in its scoping document
(available here

They should be experts on invasive alien species within one or more of the
following disciplines: natural sciences; social sciences; or the
humanities; be indigenous and local knowledge experts or have expertise in
indigenous and local knowledge systems; or be policy experts and
practitioners. All nominees should have experience in working within
interdisciplinary and/or international contexts.

Governments and organizations are invited to nominate experts from a
diversity of disciplinary backgrounds and gender, in order to ensure a
balanced team of experts.
Please follow this procedure to nominate experts:

   1. Nominees are invited to fill out the application form and attach
   their curriculum vitae through the dedicated web portal

   3. Nominators and Nominees will receive a confirmation via email once
   the nomination has been duly submitted.

Interested experts (Nominees) who would like to seek nomination by a
Government, are encouraged to contact their IPBES National Focal Point (

regarding any country-specific processes or deadlines and are requested to
fill out their application form by no later than *11 January 2019*.
Nominators (governments or organizations) should approve the applications
and submit their nominations by *1 February 2019*. Early nominations ahead
of the deadline are encouraged. Experts will be selected according to the
IPBES rules of procedure during IPBES 7, taking place from 29 April to 4
May 2019 in Paris, France. Experts will be informed of their selection in
June 2019.

There may also be the opportunity for a small number of early career
experts to participate in the assessment under the IPBES Fellowship
Programme. It is planned to launch a call for nominations to the Fellowship
Programme following IPBES 7, pending approval of the budget at IPBES 7.

*Mini-symposium "Policy for biodiversity and ecosystem services: threats
become opportunities"*

We all know the story: nature is not doing well. Biodiversity that forms
the basis of our economy, our well-being and our survival is deteriorating
at high speed worldwide. Scientists are sounding the alarm. The effects of
this crisis can be clearly demonstrated, felt and measured today, but are
they also manageable?

During this symposium we want to focus on the opportunities that the
Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Services (IPBES <http://www.ipbes.net>) offers us to restore nature. IPBES
gathers the latest scientific knowledge on biodiversity to inform policy
makers. The overall goal is thus comparable to what the much better known
IPCC is doing forclimate change.

In its reports, IPBES not only points to the (often negative) trends and
causes, but also to possible scenarios and pathways for a more sustainable
society. These translate into clear opportunities for policy, and that is
what this mini-symposium is about: *what can we do in concrete terms as
policy maker, administration, stakeholder, umbrella organisation, company,
citizen*?

That's why we are inviting you to brainstorm on concrete economic and
policy solutions with which we can help turning the tide and avoid negative
ecological, economic and social effects for Flanders.

*Mini-symposium "Beleid voor biodiversiteit en ecosysteemdiensten:
bedreigingen worden kansen"*

Het verhaal is u bekend: het gaat niet goed met de natuur. De
biodiversiteit die de basis vormt van onze economie, ons welzijn en ons
voortbestaan, gaat wereldwijd op verontrustende wijze achteruit. De
wetenschappers trekken aan de alarmbel. De effecten van deze crisis zijn
vandaag duidelijk aantoonbaar, voelbaar en meetbaar, maar zijn ze ook
beheersbaar?

Tijdens dit symposium willen we focussen op de opportuniteiten die het
IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and
Ecosystem Services) ons aanreikt om de natuur te herstellen. IPBES
verzamelt de laatste wetenschappelijke kennis omtrent biodiversiteit om
beleidsmakers te informeren. Het algemene doel is dus vergelijkbaar met wat
het veel bekendere IPCC doet rond klimaatverandering.

In zijn rapporten duidt het IPBES niet alleen op de (vaak negatieve) trends
en oorzaken, maar het wijst ook op mogelijke scenario's en pathways voor
een duurzamere samenleving. Deze vertalen zich in duidelijke kansen voor
het beleid, en dat is waar dit mini-symposium over gaat: *wat kunnen wij
concreet doen als beleidsmaker, administratie, belangengroep,
koepelorganisatie, bedrijf, burger?*

Daarom nodigen wij u graag uit om samen de concrete economische en
beleidsoplossingen te bekijken waarmee we het tij kunnen helpen keren, en
negatieve ecologische, economische en sociale effecten voor Vlaanderen
kunnen vermijden.
