Subject: IPBES: External review of the Global Assessment (deadline 15
August)
To: wgint at bebif.be

Dear Colleagues,

Herewith, the IPBES Belgian Focal Point is calling for *expert reviewers* with
relevant knowledge and/or experience to participate to the first external
review for the *IPBES Global Assessment* of biodiversity and ecosystem
services (First Order Draft; link to Call
<http://mailchi.mp/ipbes/first-external-review-now-open-for-the-ipbes-global-assessment?e=507686f8ca&dm_i=2GI3,13CL1,4UN3GN,3AR8J,1>
)

The period for this first external review of the global assessment is from *15
June until 15 August, 2017*.

This assessment will be the first global snapshot of the state of the
world’s biodiversity in more than a decade, since the release of the Millennium
Ecosystem Assessment. <http://www.millenniumassessment.org/en/index.html> The
global assessment will provide decision makers with the state of knowledge
regarding the planet's biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they
provide to people, as well as the options to protect and use these natural
assets more sustainably. Furthermore, the global assessment will provide
vital data to assess progress against the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and
the Sustainable Development Goals.

Concurrently running are the external reviews of other IPBES assessments
for Africa, Asia-Pacific and Europe and Central Asia, and Land Degradation
and Restoration (ending 26 June 2017) and the Americas regional assessment
(ending 24 July 2017). *This external review of the Global Assessment is
thus a separate process, running in parallel to the others*.

If you would like to be an expert reviewer for the global assessment,
please follow these easy steps:

1) Register as user of the IPBES website (http://www.ipbes.net/registra
tion_global_fod) if you have not already done so.

2) Apply to become an IPBES external reviewer for individual chapters of
the global assessment at http://www.ipbes.net/user/l
ogin?destination=registration_global_fod (this will only work when logged
in first as IPBES website user).

3) Once registered, you will immediately receive an email providing
confidential access to the draft chapters and will be requested to submit
your comments in English using a template that is available on the same
webpage.

4) We would be grateful if you could also inform the IPBES Belgian Focal
Point (by email to h.eggermont at biodiversity.be) on your contribution, so
that we can consider it for our Belgian government response.

If you need further information or assistance on this matter, please do not
hesitate to contact me,

Best regards
Hilde Eggermont
